Helping Kids Grow in a Digital World

Weekly Update from the Director – March 1, 2024
Dear GISC Community,

Welcome to March 2024 in Chicago. The recent changes in weather temperature have been quite an adventure for our students, who have enjoyed nearly 70 degrees one day only to see snow falling the very next day.

In this newsletter, you will find information on an ISACS Parent Seminar to which GISC subscribes – on Tuesday, March 5, you have the great opportunity to hear and learn from Dr. Devorah Heitner, who is well-known for her best-selling book Screenwise: Helping Kids Thrive and Survive in Their Digital World. The book is a guide to understanding more about what it is like for children to grow up with technology, and to recognizing the special challenges – and advantages – that contemporary kids and teens experience thanks to this level of connection.

Tuesday’s presentation will be based on her latest book entitled Growing Up in Public in the Digital Age. I especially recommend this presentation if you are asking yourselves the following questions: How can we help our children navigate all the firsts? First Roblox playdate? First social media account? First phone?

Recent congressional hearings on the online safety for our children on social media were both enlightening and shocking – I recommend that you take the time to watch this Tuesday’s presentation. Please note that your registration will also give you access to a recording of the presentation if you cannot attend on Tuesday.

All the best,
Ben
