  • Physical Education Teacher

    The Position:
    The German International School Chicago seeks a Physical Education Teacher in Chicago, IL.

    Duties:
    The Physical Education Teacher teaches knowledge and skills in physical fitness, health education, and individual, dual or team sports to elementary and middle school students in conformance to German curriculum (“Lehrplan des Landes Baden-Württemberg”).

    The Physical Education Teacher will provide instruction exclusively in German and will incorporate German cultural and educational perspectives in all aspects of his work. The Physical Education Teacher will plan and teach units that promote an understanding of the relationship of healthy body function and exercise that motivates each student to cultivate physical fitness. Through each unit taught, the Physical Education Teacher will develop the students’ strength, skill, agility, poise, and coordination in individual, dual and team physical activities and sports, in accordance with each student’s ability.

    The Physical Education Teacher will assess the students’ progress, provide timely and constructive feedback to students, maintain control of storage and use of the school’s sports equipment, and attend staff meetings and collaborate with other educators. This Physical Education Teacher also supports the school’s Become Bilingual English Language Learner Program by teaching, a few hours per week, German to students, grades three (3) through eight (8), who require intensive German language instruction. As needed, the Physical Education Teacher will meet with students and students’ parents to discuss the students’ demeanor as well as their performance.

    Requirements:
    •    Must speak, read, and write German fluently at a native or near-native level.
    •    Must hold a bachelor’s degree (or foreign equivalent) in physical education, health education, education or a closely related field of study
    •    Must have 12-months (1-year) of experience teaching physical education at the primary, middle, or high school level.

    Additional Information:
    The offered wage is $62,297 per year and is benefits eligible, offering: medical, dental, vision, life insurance and disability insurance; 401(k); sick leave and PTO.

Teaching Internship Program

We welcome Teaching Interns from abroad every year for our Elementary and Middle School Programs for a minimum of 12 weeks up to one year. Our Intern Program is structured in 3 phases: Orientation Shadowing Phase (1-2 weeks), Participation Support Phase (4-6 weeks), Practical Phase (remainder of the internship), supported by a weekly reflection meeting on classroom management, differentiation, and co-teaching strategies. Come join our Team GISC so that you can get the most out of your internship abroad!

At GISC, you can deep-dive into co-teaching and differentiation strategies with a focus on teaching and learning in state-of-the-art classrooms.

Most interns choose to stay with GISC host families, building relationships in the home and bringing a dose of German language and culture to our community.
