Investing in Professional Development at GISC

Weekly Update from GISC – Special Guest Edition – February 14, 2025 – By Dr. Inka Kirchenbüchler & Katharina Koch Staley
Dear GISC Community,
Every year GISC invests into the professional development of its teachers using in house funds, but primarily federal funds.

Teachers attend workshops that are intricately linked to GISC’s culture such as Responsive Classroom or IB workshops. In March, for example, two teachers will dedicate a weekend to learn more about their respective IB program. Other teachers want to gain additional expertise in their subject area. Our music teachers just attended the Illinois Music Educator Conference, four math teachers have attended math workshops, especially focusing on making math lessons an interactive hands on experience. Our Head of English attended a workshop in Dyslexia.

These are just a few examples of the many workshops GISC teachers visit during the school year, but also over the summer break.

GISC then uses Staff Development Days (like today) and meetings to share new knowledge gained with a wider group of educators to further the expertise of all staff members. With this funding and collaboration model, GISC ensures the sustainability of professional development and its instructional quality.

We hope that you enjoy the weekend and February Break.

With best regards,
Dr. Inka Kirchenbüchler
