Dr. Rhonda Duffaut, Director
Rhonda Duffaut moved to Chicago from San Francisco, where she taught elementary, middle, and high school at the German-American International School as Head of the English Department. She has been active in the preschool education of her two children in which German language and culture played a significant role.
She had a large part in the establishment of the school and is thrilled to be the director, working with its enthusiastic and dedicated staff.
Birgit Huber-Gailer, Teacher
Birgit Huber-Gailer, born and raised in Munich, Germany, holds a degree (Staatsexamen) in teaching at elementary schools, University of Bamberg, Germany. She taught in public elementary schools in Germany for 7 years and was the coordinator of the COMENIUS Project, sponsored by the European Union. She founded the students magazine work group and won the first price in the nationwide student magazine competition in 2007. In cooperation with the Ludwig-Maximilian- University, Munich she coached and educated students during their internship.
She is very excited about the opportunity to work at the German School Chicago and to help children building up a cross-cultural understanding and a bilingual knowledge.
Karola Roehrich, Assistant Teacher
Karola Roehrich was born and raised in Germany. After finishing high school, she came to the U.S. to work as an AuPair for two years. Since then, she has been employed as a nanny and a teacher’s assistant at a private preschool for 15 months. She lives in McHenry with her husband and their two dogs.
In 2009 she received an A.A.S. Degree in Paraprofessional Education from the College of Lake County. Her passion is teaching children, so that they can grow up to become self-confident, creative, and independent individuals. Karola is honored to be part of the GSC and cannot wait to share all her experiences with the preschool and kindergarten students.
David Ben-Porat, After Hour Care
David Ben-Porat was born and raised in Norwalk, Connecticut. He is a professional musician specializing in trombone and voice. In the fall 2002, after completing two years at Indiana University in Bloomington, David transferred to the Hochschule fuer Musik “Hanns Eisler” in Berlin, Germany. After graduating, he remained in Berlin until the spring of 2009, and recently decided to relocate to Chicago. He joined the GSC in hope of retaining his German skills and being able to help and witness kids grow with the added advantage of maturing bilingual.
Birgit Rupprecht, After Hour Care
Birgit lives in Chicago with her husband, who has a project for 2-4 years at Minich Re Insurance Company. She enjoys her life right now, getting to know the city and following her hobbies while waiting for her work permit. In approximately March 2010 she will receive her work permit and then she would like to work again in the fashion branch as a consultant for brandmanaging. But until then she enjoys helping in the German school twice a week and loves to play with the kids. She thinks it is a great opportunity for them to have the chance to be so close to the German language and culture.
